Gender Reel 2011
Additionally, the festival premiered 28 films about all kinds of important issues related to the TG/GV/queer experience. In addition to showing art, photography and films, the festival hosted three panel discussions, a water color workshop, an off-site installation at the Eastern State Penitentiary, and an after party celebration.
Festival planning started almost a year before the event itself when nine amazingly talented and passionate organizers came together to embark on creating the east coasts only multi-media festival dedicated to enhancing visibility of gender non-conforming, gender variant and transgender artists, images and experiences.
Efforts kicked off in Dec 2010 during our first ever organizers meeting and continued monthly until the festival in Sept 2011. In addition to holding monthly organizing meetings, Organizers worked hard to get the word out to others about GR by tabling at LGBTQ events in and around Philadelphia, like the Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference and Phily Black Gay Pride and collaborating with other LGBTQ groups, such as Screwsmart and the Leeway Foundation.
Specific organizing activities included, but are not limted to securing a venue, creating a website, participating in day long film re-treats and fundraising. Currently, Organizers are gearing up for an even bigger year in 2012. Below is a breakdown of our 2011 budget. genderreel2011budget.
